As of March, Giant Food Stores and Martin’s Food Markets have donated more than $794,620 to hunger relief agencies in the region. These funds will benefit more than 100 food banks in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Giant/Martin has donated more than $12.3 million to these organizations since 2008.

The company’s philanthropic efforts will be carried out in conjunction with its Giant Cares initiative, which encourages shoppers to donate change up to the nearest dollar.

This year, Giant will donate $5M to local nonprofits, and its associates will volunteer at partner organizations to help them prepare meals for hungry families. To participate in the Giant Gives initiative, GIANT Food Stores customers must first scratch off the scratch-off layer on their giving tag, revealing a unique identifier code. Once uncovered, shoppers can then select a nonprofit online. There is a pre-populated list of over 3,500 nonprofits for shoppers. These include organizations that support hunger relief, children’s health, and the armed forces. Those organizations that are not listed can request to participate in the program.

Giant also makes donations of hand sanitizer and toilet paper. These items will be distributed to the Capital Area Food Bank, Maryland Food Bank, Delaware Food Bank, Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, and United Way. During the pandemic, Giant made essential products available in-store and online. The company also made available Giant Pickup and Giant Delivers.

Giant Food stores select a local nonprofit each month to benefit from the program. ArtStream, which provides collaborative performance opportunities and lifelong learning to individuals with disabilities, was chosen as the August beneficiary.
