Trader Joe’s was first opened 43 years ago in Pasadena. The name was chosen to evoke images of the South Pacific. The store sold everything from convenience store staples to good booze. Though the concept is somewhat dated today, it was revolutionary back then, and the grocery store soon became a huge success.
It’s not clear if the two Amabile businesses were related, but they were both in the same residential neighborhood. One was a conventional grocery store, while the other was a specialty store. While the Tribune’s investigation did not identify the ownership of those two stores, it was able to identify the addresses of both stores. In addition to Amabile’s Food Center, Amabile & Sons had been located at the same address. While the Tribune was unable to independently verify the information provided, the grocery store closed in 2018.
Trader Joe’s is a chain of convenience stores. Its founder, Joe Coulombe, learned the business while working at a drugstore chain in California. He later launched his own convenience store chain, Pronto Markets. In 1967, he decided to try something new and decided to name the store Trader Joe’s. He started a sauce business

Young started by doctoring his family’s barbecue sauce, which his father had made at home. He eventually eliminated high fructose corn syrup and gluten from his sauce. From there, he bottled his product and marketed it through local grocery stores. He demoed his sauce in the grocery store and sold between 150 and 200 bottles a day.
Joe’s is an unorthodox grocery store. Its employees travel around the world to source ingredients and find the best prices.
